The Client

A leading Australian manufacturing business was looking to expand their business into the Chinese domestic market. It was internally agreed that an attractive secondment offer would be made to a high performing Australian senior executive (earmarked as a future CEO of the business) to set up the operations in a tier 2 Chinese city.

The Brief

The business contacted TEMI Connect as they wanted to ensure that all aspects of the secondment was being considered to ensure:

  • the Australian senior executive would ultimately make an informed decision
  • the package would be globally competitive
  • any potential risks (to both the individual and the business) was minimised

The Solution

The TEMI Connect team arranged a myriad of briefings (from tax, financial planning, etc) and provided the necessary information to assist the business in developing a competitive package. This was delivered collaboratively and seamlessly to both parties within a tight timeframe.

The Result

After the initial few briefings the Australian senior executive was excited at the prospect of moving abroad. The secondment package promised to deliver a significant financial windfall should all go well.

However, after visiting the tier 2 city on a “look see visit”, attending the cultural orientation classes and solo independent research, the Australian senior executive declined the secondment opportunity. This was on the basis that she did not believe that she and her family would socially and culturally integrate into the community. Language was a significant barrier as was the lack of an expatriate population in the tier 2 city. The international school had only been recently set up in the city and there were concerns that the standard of teaching was below par.

The Australian business, although initially disappointed, were cognizant of the fact that had the senior executive moved abroad and the secondment failed, there was a strong likelihood of losing a significant talent and future leader of the business. It was agreed that they would continue searching elsewhere for a suitable country head.
