Technology Provides the Path to Informed Decision Making

Information is essential to all companies, however many organizations struggle to provide the right information to the right people at the right time. Having a comprehensive technology solution and strategy gives Global Mobility professionals the ability to access information quickly and easily. In today’s environment where Global Mobility professionals are constantly being asked to do more with fewer resources, technology solutions which help collect, organize and integrate the data have become essential for repeatable data analysis and decision making. Absent a solution, decision making will be more ad hoc and anecdotal than structured and analytical.

According to the latest global mobility technology survey results, only 12% of multinational companies are currently using technology to manage their global mobility program and even fewer organizations have a comprehensive strategy for gathering, evaluating, and using data. Organizing the data that relates to global employees is the start to developing an efficient and comprehensive strategy for assignment management. For most companies, data is originated, housed, and reported in many different systems and storage locations, each utilized by different groups or departments within the organization.

It is an ongoing challenge to collect data from these disparate sources and organize it in a way that is meaningful to all the users that need access. A sophisticated technology tool with the ability to interface and communicate with each data source and make the data compatible for multiple users is the critical first step to data based decision making. Before data can drive business strategy and decision making, it has to be organized in a central location that can be accessed by a diverse user group.

Once a tool is in place to collect and organize data from different sources across a business, access to this data combined with analytical tools will improve the functioning power of every group. When different groups within a business share access to the same data, integrity of the information is improved, less procedural errors occur, and the data becomes a valuable asset that can be used to help tell a common story. For example, sending one employee on assignment triggers many groups to get involved. Payroll needs to pay, finance needs to budget, HR needs to plan, and Global Mobility needs to manage the entire process.

Utilizing a technology tool empowers specialized groups to think more about the big picture of a company’s strategy and how each group can improve their function within this strategy. A technology tool is essential for bringing data and users together in a way that makes each component more valuable to the business as a whole. The end goal of data collection is to enable analytics to sharpen business strategy and drive efficiency. Analytical processes are only possible once the data generated by disparate areas of a business have been collected, organized, and integrated into a usable format. Different data analytical techniques can be used to describe current trends within the business, discover information and outcomes of current policies, and create models to forecast or predict future outcomes.

For example, do you know the three biggest drivers of assignment success within your organization? It may seem obvious that it is important to know this, but most can only guess at the answers. Data based analytics are essential to ensuring a business has the most current, efficient and effective strategy for global mobility management. Whilst many organizations are still struggling to get their hands around who their assignees are, where they are, and how much they cost, successfully implementing a technology tool can easily help and those answers.

Ultimately, not having to worry about the basic questions will allow you to focus on asking higher level questions such as: Are we sending the right people? Are we being successful? What is the ROI of this assignment? When you need answers for the business that are supported by proof, the starting point is making sure that your data is in order.
