Toll Transitions: Sustainability in Action

GUEST POST BY TOLL TRANSITIONS

As many who have worked with Toll know, we move the businesses that move the world, and we also move their employees, household goods and pets. Toll’s purpose demonstrates commitment to our customers, people, and ESG (environment, social and governance), with safety always being our top priority.

The Transitions team integrate Toll’s sustainability actions into our business, translating them in a way that is relevant to the removals and relocations world and tailored to our specialised services and customer needs.

We know that sustainability in relocations is more than an environmental policy. It involves contributing to communities, reducing our environmental footprint and supporting our people and our customers.

“We’re committed to transparency, acting with care and diligence, respecting the natural environment, and promoting a safe and healthy workplace. The Transitions team follow these principles in carrying out all day-to-day responsibilities.

By developing and employing sustainable business practices in all areas of our profession, we are taking the right steps to ensure our work will continue to thrive in the future.”

Franca Napoli, GM Toll 4PL Services – Toll Group, October 2021

Our People: “We’re Safety Obsessed”

Toll promotes a safe and healthy workplace through our Safety Obsessed culture and the underlying belief that everyone has the right to go home safely. This extends beyond our workforce to our customers and communities.

A perfect example of how our Safety Obsessed culture is brought to life is how our field Relocation Consultants (RCs) carefully follow all COVID-safety requirements whilst providing critical on the ground relocation support services to inbound expatriates.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, our RCs have been working on the front-line delivering home and school finding solutions as well as departure services for our clients in the safest way possible through virtual inspections, or simpler adjustments like wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and thoroughly cleaning all equipment to remain COVID-compliant.

We’ve also invested in our people by rolling out the Ready Resilience Roadmap Program (designed and facilitated by Wendy Jenkins) to some of our teams to focus on helping them thrive during times of change and challenge. The program uses practical neuroscience-based resilience tools that are proven to offer in-the-moment solutions and long-lasting results.

The Ready Resilience Roadmap Program is one of the many training programs we offer our team to arm them with the necessary skills to achieve our sustainability goals.

Our Environment: We’re committed to reducing our environmental impact

Another commitment Toll Transitions takes very seriously is protecting our natural environment.   Toll’s Environment Policy commits the business to actively consider the use of alternative energy sources and low emissions technology as they become economically viable.

We seek to incorporate environmental and energy conservation considerations into our business decision-making processes where practical, particularly for capital allocation.  Our investment in new hybrid vehicles is one of the ways we are supporting sustainable approaches in practical ways.

The Toll Transitions team manages around 27,000 domestic and international relocations for our Australian defence and international corporate clients in any typical year. Our Transitions Consultants visit customers and various facilities and suppliers to fine-tune all the details to ensure that the removal goes perfectly.

When our existing vehicles were nearing the end of their useful life, we replaced them with a more modern and efficient fleet of Toyota Corolla hybrid vehicles. These vehicles have a better safety rating and the savings from anticipated fuel and repair savings was compelling.

Importantly, our calculations indicate that the Toyota Corolla hybrids are expected to reduce Toll’s carbon emissions by around 157 tonnes per year.

Plus, we’ve also gone paperless in the delivery of relocation services to reduce our environmental impact. We’re maximising the efficiency of IT platforms used by staff in-house and on the road, and where possible, we now have paperless file management. This extends to our removals documentation process which incorporates an electronic inventory collection methodology that interfaces with Toll IT platforms, increasing efficiency and reducing requirement for paper forms.

One of Toll’s critical areas of focus is reducing our environmental impact, so the new fleet and going paperless are small but important steps towards achieving that goal.

Our Community: We Care, We Listen

Another essential component in achieving our sustainability goals is to act with care and diligence, supporting communities and initiatives.  Our Toll Transitions team is passionate about supporting Indigenous initiatives regarding community support and employment.

We promote reconciliation through various activities, including NAIDOC and National Reconciliation Week.   In recognition of this year’s NAIDOC week theme: Heal Country! the Toll 4PL Services team members enjoyed visiting the NAIDOC week show at West End Art Space which showcased the work of indigenous Australian and Torres Strait artists.

We are focused on contributing in a responsible and meaningful way to our people and our communities.  Our vision is to support a diverse and inclusive organisation where differences are valued and employees act ethically and respectfully.

Our Commitment

“With clear global shifts in community sentiment and expectation, we understand and firmly believe that sustainability and business success are closely connected.

When I think about where Toll is on our sustainability journey, we have made good progress over the years and that inspires us to do even better.

Our sustainability journey will be ongoing. We will, with urgency, continue striving to make improvements, reduce our environmental footprint, and contribute to communities and areas where our work will have the greatest impact.”
